Preventing The Forward Pass

This practice helps develop the central players understanding of how to set traps to intercept the ball affectively. Green and Red team will try to combine and keep possession of the ball against the Yellow team. Both teams will have unlimited touches and passes to try and play through the central Yellow players as quickly as they can. 

Once the Yellow team wins possession of the ball they they swap with the team that lost the ball quickly so transition can be maintained.

Barcelona Alternative Passing Rotations

This practice is great for developing the passing and rotation work show in others though incorporates two central players that could work as a 9 & 10, 4 & 8 or 5 & 6 where as the outside players movement and angels will represent any wide player (2, 7, 3 or 11).

Session starts by the ball going across the central zone to the furthest Green (or Yellow) player who sets for the other Green (or Yellow) player to pass back out. The ball the transfers across the area to the top players. The Green and Yellow players will then switch zones and perform the same movements. Check the movements so that they arrive when the ball is traveling rather then finding themselves standing still.

This session has been around for years and called so many different things, it all has the same outcome: Develops passing and receiving angles. The session starts with the balls opposite sides of the square and goes in the same direction (Anti-clockwise or Clockwise). Once the passer has made the pass they then follow and take the opposite players position.

There are so many variations to this session and your creativity and imagination is only the limitation here. We have chosen the following progressions though there are several more that offer different outcomes.

This practice helps develop the movement patterns needed to get the most out of your players in the final third. Start with your attacking players on the mannequins, as they pull off, a ball is played to their back foot opening them up ready to finish. Challenge the players to be confident in front of goal and find different ways to finish affectively.

After the shot has happened the passing player becomes the finisher and a rotation is performed. After all the players have had a chance (or several) they then change the angle of receiving and finishing which will encourage different types within the final third.

Penetrating Centrally

This session is designed to help a team break down a stubborn opposition. Red team will need to keep possession of the ball and look to play to the central player when able to. Being patient with the ball will be a key focus in this session. Yellow players can either be locked into the central area or able to leave though with an understanding that they are leaving their opposition unmarked. If the yellow player wins the ball outside of the area it counts for more than winning inside.

Red team will need to move the ball quickly and look at penetrating fast when the chance is on. Central red player will have the option to rotate with outside players to look at new ways of penetrating successfully. Focus is on the Red team breaking down the central area though there are several bi-products from this great session for both sides.
